AFCON Morocco 2025: CAF declares Senegal forfeited and awards the victory to Morocco
The Appeals Jury of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued its decision regarding the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, which had initially been won on the pitch by Senegal.
In an official statement, the body indicated that, “in application of Article 84 of the competition regulations,” the Senegal national team has been declared to have forfeited the match. As a result, the final score has been validated as a 3-0 victory in favor of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
This decision follows the review of incidents that occurred during the final, which led to a temporary interruption of the match. The Appeals Jury considered that these events constituted a breach of the applicable regulations.
It should be recalled that the match, played in Rabat, had initially ended with a victory for Senegal after extra time. However, the incidents that took place during the game led to disciplinary proceedings, followed by an appeal reviewed by CAF.
At the conclusion of this process, CAF reclassified the result of the final, officially awarding the victory to the Moroccan national team by default, thus granting the Atlas Lions a second continental title, 49 years after their first triumph in 1976.
With this achievement, Morocco now has a total of two Africa Cup of Nations titles, in addition to a final appearance in 2004, confirming its consistent presence among the continent’s most competitive national teams, with more than 18 participations in the final tournament.
