National Team : Mohamed OUAHBI takes over from Walid REGRAGUI
Our national team is entering a new chapter with the departure of Walid REGRAGUI and the appointment of Mohamed OUAHBI as head coach of the Atlas Lions. This transition marks the end of a particularly significant cycle for Moroccan football and the beginning of a new phase focused on upcoming international competitions.
Appointed head coach in August 2022, Walid REGRAGUI led the national team for nearly four years. During his tenure, the Atlas Lions played 49 international matches, recording 36 victories, 8 draws and 5 defeats, corresponding to a win rate of approximately 73.5%.
His time in charge will notably be remembered for Morocco’s historic performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals and finished in 4th place globally, becoming the first African and Arab nation to achieve such a result.
This transition comes at a time when the national team currently occupies the 8th position in the FIFA World Ranking, the highest ranking in its history, while also standing as the top-ranked team in Africa.
To maintain this momentum, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has entrusted the leadership of the national team to Mohamed OUAHBI. A coach with more than 20 years of experience, he spent 17 years at RSC Anderlecht, where he worked with several youth categories and contributed to the development of numerous young talents.
Appointed head coach of Morocco’s U20 national team in 2022, Mohamed OUAHBI quickly achieved notable results, leading the team to victory in the UNAF U20 Tournament in 2024, before guiding them to the final of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2025. That same year, he led Morocco to victory at the FIFA U20 World Cup, securing the country’s first world title in this category.
The appointment of Mohamed OUAHBIreflects the ambition to build on the achievements of recent years and to continue strengthening the positive momentum of Moroccan football on both the continental and international stages.
